Ardath Jo Green was born on 24 June 1923 in Pennington Gap, Lee County, Virginia, the daughter of Etta Ellison Green (1886-1980) and John Wallace Green (1867-1937). The family later added a brother, Fred Hamilton Green (1930-1989). On 19 August 1943, Ardath Jo Green enlisted with the Women's Reserve of the U.S. Navy. In 1948, she and a colleague were the first two women in the Fifth Naval District to be sworn in as members of the regular Navy, following the passage of the Women's Armed Service Integration Act in June of that year. Her 24-year military career included three tours at the Recruit Training Center in Bainbridge, Maryland (from which she retired as a Chief Disbursing Clerk in 1967). Among the many roles she took on over the course of her military service were Chief Master-at-arms, WAVE barracks, U.S. Naval Hospital, St. Albans, N.Y.; assisting in planning the WAVES barracks at Brooklyn, N.Y.; working in the Disbursing Office at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida; and serving as Company Commander for eight recruit companies (in her second tour at Bainbridge). Green has also resided in Prince George and Henrico Counties, Virginia. She taught in various elementary and high schools in Missouri. On 20 November 1940, she married William Kenneth Rutherford (1907-1990). Dares Emery Wirt was born in 1924 in Massachusetts. He served as an officer and pilot in the United States Navy, including a stint at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station at Chincoteague, Virginia. Wirt retired as a captain in the United State Naval Reserve. He married Esther Dulin Johnson (1923-1998) in 1947, and they had at least four children. Rose Popek graduated from Washington Henry High School in Hanover County in 1936 and attended Smithdeal Massey Business School. Popek worked for the Commonwealth of Virginia in the unemployment commission. After her marriage to Joseph Basl in 1947, Rose Basl moved to Prince George County, Virginia, working as a clerk in an insurance agency. The Basls had two children. After her husband's death in 1971, Rose Basl worked as a clerk in a realty and in an insurance agency, then for the city of Petersburg, Virginia. James Joseph Basl was born 19 July 1949 to Joseph Basl (d. 1971) and Rose Popek Basl (1919-) in Petersburg, Virginia. He attended Petersburg Public High School and the University of Virginia, from where he graduated with a BA in 1971. Basl earned a Master's of Business Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978. After graduation, Basl worked in banking. He now lives in Midlothian, Chesterfield County, Virginia. Papers, 1924-1942, 1972, of Frank Perlette Shull (1904-1972) of Lexington and Lynchburg, Virginia, include several letters to the editor of the Rockbridge County News and other papers, 1939-1941, predicting that the United States would not be able to stay neutral as World War II got underway, and urging preparedness. Another frequent topic of his letters to the editor was the presidential election of 1940, arguing against a third term for Franklin D. Roosevelt and in support of Wendell Willkie. Six pieces of correspondence, 1939-1941, include two letters from Harry F. Byrd thanking Shull for his supportive letter published in the Roanoke Times and two from Carter Glass responding to Shull's letters urging aid to the Allies. Miscellaneous papers include an essay Shull wrote on the topic of syphilis, entitled "The Third Great Plague," written in January 1924 while a student at Washington and Lee; notes on the "interviewing method;" two family snapshots; two passports, 1933 and 1937, for Shull that include photographs of both him and his wife, Nellie Wyatt Shull (1911-1998); and Shull's obituary, July 1972. When Shull was six years old, he moved with his family to Erwin, Tennessee, where he went on to graduate from Erwin High School. He attended Washington and Lee from 1922-1927, earning a bachelor's and a master's degree. He taught French for many years at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, where he worked at the time he wrote most of the letters to the editor included in this collection. Shull married Nellie Elizabeth Wyatt (1911-1998) in August 1931. The couple had a son, Frank Richard Shull. They divorced in May 1963. Frank Perlette Shull died on 7 July 1972 in Richmond. A prosperous farmer in Albemarle County, Railey was active in the Democratic party. He married Edna Elizabeth Lewis 29 October 1895, and they had no children.
